Rejecting classic structuralisms from orthodox Marxist materialism to Saussurean linguistics and Levi-Straussian anthropology, CDA maintains that discourse is to be understood not as an epiphenomenal product of structural determinants, but as a constitutive mode/function of power relations. In the two parts, "North and South" and "South and North," Dorfman points to a flawed binary, an opposition that is inclusive rather than epiphenomenal, since what we have is not north versus south, but rather north and south, which, in keeping with the title of the book, suggests Dorfman as a Janus face, a being who straddles the north and the south, always tied to both to some degree. An emphasis on political economy and materialist approaches to the past together rendered religion epiphenomenal to the seemingly more concrete questions of class and the state. |
