This is the first study to use a large number of soil-derived dusts to test whether the in vitro cytokine secretion responses in a widely used immortalized lung epithelial cell line treated with varying concentrations of particles were correlated with, or explained by, the specific chemical species, such as the functionally defined carbon fractions, measured using the STN and IMPROVE monitoring network protocols. To investigate cellular tropism of influenza viruses, the authors employed cultures of differentiated human airway epithelial cells which closely mimic airway epithelium in vivo. |
