The high school conference held by ESU 1 is giving practitioners a way to begin discussing how to change high schools, rather than waiting for some outside interest to tell us how. These images are indeed a grotesquerie, even though their associations with Esu Elegba or the Trickster can show them intentionally working to destabilize and undermine power. Just as scholars readily identify the presence of the Yoruba god Esu Legba when writers depict real and symbolic crossroads within certain contexts (Gates, Marvin, Pavlic), images of webs and weaving may be similarly read as signs of Ananse's or Aunt Nancy's presence. |
