These images are indeed a grotesquerie, even though their associations with Esu Elegba or the Trickster can show them intentionally working to destabilize and undermine power.
Just as scholars readily identify the presence of the Yoruba god Esu Legba when writers depict real and symbolic crossroads within certain contexts (Gates, Marvin, Pavlic), images of webs and weaving may be similarly read as signs of Ananse's or Aunt Nancy's presence.
