Poppies and other wildflowers - including fiddlenecks and filaree, usually the earliest of the valley's native flowers - are blooming at spots along the roads leading to the reserve. Many native plants can no longer be found and other foreign grasses--such as filaree, Russian thistle, halogetan, and cheat grass--take over. Besides the poppies - which right now have the thickest blooms on south-facing slopes outside the reserve's boundaries - other wildflowers are blooming at the reserve and elsewhere around the valley: pygmy lupines, cream cups, redstem filaree and fiddlenecks. |
