An area on a hard disk or floppy disk where information is stored about the physical location of each piece of every file on the disk and about the location of unusable areas of the disk.

The structure of the disk tracking system is contained in the File Allocation Table which keeps data sectors allocated in groups called clusters.
When interfacing to flash drives, Vinculum manages the file allocation table (FAT) structure by using a straightforward command set.
All disk imaging products support the Windows file systems -- File Allocation Table (FAT) 16, FAT 32, and NT File System (NTFS)--and some provided limited support for Linux file systems Ext2, Ext3 and Linux Swap, but today only Acronis supports ReiserFS, the default file system used by SuSE Linux.
