Intelligently written and skillfully directed in the form of a puzzle by Neil Burger (Interview with the Assassin), and elegantly photographed with style and opulence in the fin-de-siècle theaters and hunting lodges of Prague, The Illusionist has a lyrical quality that becomes almost surreal.
While nothing much happens in Kafka’s life, we learn a great deal about the Yiddish Theater (from which Kafka borrowed certain broad farcical gestures for his fiction), the fin-de-siècle Zionist movement (which bored Kafka), the history of the letter “as one of the essential forms of expression of modern individuality” (Kafka wrote a lot of letters), and any number of momentous historical trends.
Perhaps a staging more perfumed with fin-de-siècle wistfulness would have masked the scent of mothballs, but I doubt it.
