In August, when the members of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth went after John Kerry, Novak used his column and television appearances to hype their claim that Kerry had lied his way into receiving medals in Vietnam, and flacked their book, Unfit for Command, with a glowing review. Republicans are afraid to criticize him too openly, except for the likes of John McCain and Liddy Dole, who flacked for military escalation including ground troops. Indeed, the promoters of the scheme themselves knew that people would instinctively tune out the boring mini-speeches; that is why they flacked loudly for "roadblocks" - times at which all broadcast nets would air Clinton or Dole simultaneously. |
