The simple magnetic flux gate sensor used in many autopilots is rarely good enough for this purpose.
CRM500 comes in multiple form factors and configurations to enable easy "plug n play" upgrades from the existing Floated Flux Gate sensor systems.
In addition, the magnetic compass, whether the conventional direct reading type or the electronic flux gate that provides guidance to the autopilot, is adversely affected by the boat's motion, making the autopilot's performance deteriorate in a seaway.
