The plane, perpendicular to the optical axis of the lens, in which images of points in the object field of the lens are focused.

Using a second computer procedure, the microscope scans many focal planes and builds a three-dimensional image of the object, much as CAT scans do.
As the Holodisc turns, it focuses several laser beams into multiple focal planes to create thousands of scan lines per second, resulting in a very large, dense scan field.
The use of multiple focal planes permits patterns of up to 80 interlocking scan lines to scan bar codes at up to two meters from the scanner face.
