I like to believe it's the latter, that George and Martha have not spent the past umpteen years enacting scenes like this as a kind of cracked foreplay.
So sure is she that she could never have a happy relationship that she pushes aside a decent guy (Jeffrey Donovan) who's been trying to introduce her to unfamiliar concepts like foreplay and kissing while sober.
