WITH the assassination of journalist Hrant Dink, Armenians -- and all who value truth, freedom of the press and freedom of religion -- have lost a tremendous champion.
poll conducted for the National Post and the Institute for Canadian Values revealed that a majority of Canadians want Parliament to act to protect freedom of religion and speech from the attacks of same-sex supporters.
But the idea of "separation of church and state" (a phrase not in the Constitution) and the role of religion in public life are still intensely debated: Conservatives often argue that the First Amendment protects freedom of religion, not freedom from religion; liberals often say that the best way to protect religious freedom is to minimize its role in public life.
