Geriatrician and Clinical Director of Aged Care Rehabilitation Medicine at the Ballarat Health Service, Dr Mark Yates, warned that rural and regional Australia will be swamped with epidemic proportions of people with dementia in five to ten years time unless systems are put in place to tackle the problem.
Much of this starts with an excellent book published in 1998 by geriatricians John Rowe and Robert Kahn called Successful Aging.
[Anemia] is associated with higher mortality, disability, higher risk of falls in the elderly, poorer quality of life, increased hospitalization risk, and increased health care utilization," says geriatrician and epidemiologist Luigi Ferrucci of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) in Baltimore.
