Wells' style of rendering saints initially exhibited the same bold and isolated marks seen in his morada paintings; but later, he experimented with sgraffito -- scratching through a painted surface to expose the gessoed support beneath.
Hoffman-Kowal has arranged five rectangles within a format of three squares, including the border of white gessoed paper that is the foundation of this work.
The quasi-abstract, often heroic images result from an improvisational and muscular handling of materials: Rockman pours onto gessoed paper a mixture of oil paints, alkyd resins, and mineral spirits, the density of which varies from thin wash to thick syrupy pool.
