Some opponents of the practice raise the specter of young gigolos reeling in wealthy old bags and "extorting" them. In his nearly 40-year career as a film director, John Schlesinger was never one to flinch from controversial material, be it the empty decadence of early-1960s London (Darling), the gritty life of New York City hustlers and gigolos (Midnight Cowboy), or the simple gesture of a close-up romantic kiss between two men when such scenes were unheard of (Sunday Bloody Sunday). Others, like Tulsa Slut, 2002, Solo Gigolos, 2002, Sex at Noon Taxes, 2002, were consciously racier, conjuring adult film titles--but still disjointedly absurd, working against the majesty of their backgrounds in the same way porn makes a mockery out of narrative. |
