On demanding roads with short straights and tight bends our brakes made some graunching noises but at least we didn't suffer the pedal-to-the-floor brake failure of one colleague when the pads broke up.
Gearboxes, both manual and automatic, are meant to be silent in executive cars like the big Rover, so any noises, or graunching, or sticking movements could spell trouble .
Gearboxes come in for a lot of stick from some drivers with resulting wear on the selector forks and syncromesh which can lead to awkward changes or graunching noises.
