Any of various massive extinct edentates, especially of the genus Megatherium, inhabiting South America during the Pleistocene Epoch and related to the sloths. Also called giant ground sloth.

Adults of some ground sloth species approached 5 meters in length.
Anthropologist Paul Martin believes that the extinction of the mammoth, mastodon, ground sloth, and the saber-toothed cat directly or indirectly resulted from the "prehistoric overkill" by exceptionally competent hunters.
