During an interview with Reuters news agency reporters regarding the attack in 2000 on the USS Cole in Yemen in which suicide bombers using a small boat rammed the guided missile destroyer, Allen said, "We haven't put nearly as much thinking in science and technology and (general) thought into the small-vessel threat as we need to and I think that's where we need to go to next.
The next Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer will be named in honor of VAdm.
Like its other Arleigh-Burke Class ships, DDG 112 will be a 9,200-ton multi-mission guided missile destroyer capable of conducting a variety of operations, from peacetime presence and crisis management to sea control and power projection, in support of the National Military Strategy.
