Panax ginseng may have some effect on shifting the balance between the helper cells. In the body, immune cells called CD4 T helper cells produce a host of proteins, including interleukin-4, that orchestrate the response to invaders. However, the PHI group did exhibit stronger T helper cell responses, which led the researchers to suggest that "individuals treated in early infection may benefit from [therapeutic] strategies aimed at enhancing virus-specific CTL responses, whereas individuals treated later in infection may benefit from strategies aimed at enhancing HIV-1-specific T helper cell functions as well as broadening CTL responses to combat increased viral diversity. |
