Replying to a correspondent who had asked about the effects of his First World War experiences on his work, Tolkien had this to say about the landscape of Middle-earth, the setting for both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: "The Dead Marshes and the approaches to the Morannon owe something to Northern France after the Battle of the Somme.
Had Tolkien not revised ``The Lord of the Rings,'' Frodo Baggins, the heroic hobbit protagonist of the trilogy, might have emerged as Bingo, a much goofier character, Krikorian said.
That universal connection to Rings is exactly what Broadway and director-co-writer Carlene Cordova (who met at a 2001 Ian McKellen book signing and now run a production company, Stormcrow) wanted to explore in their film, which they recruited on-screen hobbit and Lost star Dominic Monaghan to narrate.
