Hussein

Hus·sein or Hu·sain or Hu·sayn  (h-sn) 1935-1999.
King of Jordan (1953-1999) who established a constitutional hereditary monarchy and espoused a moderate, generally pro-Western policy in the Middle East. He lost control of western Jordan in the Arab-Israeli War (1967) but was victorious in the resulting civil war (1970).

Hussein, Saddam 1937-2006.
Iraqi military and political leader who became president of Iraq in 1979. He waged war against Iran (1980-1988), and his invasion and occupation of Kuwait (1990) provoked the Gulf War (1990-1991). He was deposed in a US-led invasion of Iraq (2003), convicted of crimes against humanity, and executed.

In a briefing with White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer on January 27, 2003, White House reporter Russell Mokhiber referenced an article the previous day in the San Francisco Chronicle that a number of major American corporations--including Hewlett-Packard and Bechtel--helped Saddam Hussein beef up his military in the 1980s.
Ensar Demirkan, a Muslim representative on the San Fernando Valley Interfaith Council, was even more emphatic that Hussein had been brought to justice.
Hussein became Iraq's president in 1979, where he held power through terrorism into modern times.
