Throughout Central Europe, illiberalism is on the march: One could argue that relative isolation from the cosmopolitanism and culture sharing of other regions has led to a general sort of illiberalism of attitudes, as well as to an accentuation of the "mine versus thine" mentality. The essays by former China-based foreign correspondents make it dear that some of their pre-1989 efforts to report on Deng Xiaoping's political illiberalism were diluted by the disinclination of Western editors and readers to perceive the Chinese negatively. |
