Treatments that predominantly address postprandial coverage (or bolus treatments) include insulin secretagogues, regular human insulin, exenatide, pramlintide, and the rapid-acting insulin analogs: insulin lispro (Humalog), insulin aspart (Novolog), and insulin glulisine (Apidra).
If you take insulin lispro (Humalog), an insulin that works very quickly, you should take your shot just before you eat.
The rapid-acting insulin analogs (aspart, lispro, and glulisine) and premixed insulin analogs (biphasic insulin aspart 70/30 and insulin lispro 75/25, used primarily for T2DM) offer the convenience and flexibility of dosing around meals (within 15 min as opposed to 30-45 min for regular human insulin or premixed human insulin).
