The memoir is structured according to two key dualities--that of north and south and that of life and language versus death (and silence), while simultaneously pointing to the interpenetrations of these oppositions as well as to their supplements. When one considers the long relationship between Christianity and Islam, as well as the more recent interpenetrations brought about by Western colonialism, there is much to be said for this argument. By focusing on traditional areas of research and traditional research questions such as state autonomy, even sophisticated scholars who have spent a great deal of time in Egypt fail to engage informal politics or state-society interpenetrations, or even to expand their area of research a few miles outside Cairo. |
