Army, and more specifically, Army Special Forces, uses the term "unconventional warfare," or UW, to denote a type of special operation--specifically, support to indigenous irregular forces, such as resistance forces or insurgents--in the conduct of operations against an occupying force or hostile government. Another provision would grant combatant status to irregular forces even if they do not satisfy the traditional requirements to distinguish themselves from the civilian population and otherwise comply with the laws of war. But curiously enough, since the president's May Day photo op aboard the Lincoln, dozens of American troops have been killed in Iraq, most of them in ambushes staged by surprisingly resilient irregular forces. |
