Rescued by a British privateer, he joined the crew, profitably looted a mother lode of Spanish riches, returned to England, and eventually set sail again, finally dying of jungle fever in Africa. Lee's next release, Jungle Fever (1991), centers on an adulterous relationship between Flipper Purify, a black architect, and Angela Tucci, his white secretary, and continues the filmmaker's exploration of themes that emerge in his earlier work. Indeed, one of the most interesting critiques in Bound by Distance is the examination of Spike Lee's use of Italian-American characters in Jungle Fever and Do the Right Thing, figures who help to illustrate the intricacies of racial and ethnic tensions/solidarities in the United States. |
