Of the fifty-six Islamic countries, thirty-six are ranked among the worst third of the world's countries, together with the likes of communist Laos and Congo and the kleptocracies of Venezuela and the Central African Republic.
Like many of his peers, Said missed the deeper issue: whether Arabs could shape a durable, tolerant, democratic system to replace the appalling, failed kleptocracies pullulating in the region, the very regimes that oppressed them on a daily basis.
It is no surprise that most of the world's poorer and strife-wracked states are those with no or little civic nature: totalitarian states, personal dictatorships and kleptocracies.
