Mardi Gras celebrations returned to the city by the early 1800s, and in order to preserve the festivities, a secret society of men called the Mystic Krewe of Comus planned the first official Mardi Gras parade in 1857. Despite the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, 65-year-old George Patterson, secretary of the gay Mardi Gras group the Mystic Krewe of Satyricon, is keeping his beleaguered city's spirit alive. One krewe - these are parade groups formed by Mardi Gras organizations - known as Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club, lampoons racial stereotypes by dressing as African kings and wearing blackface with some white paint. |
