00 Hardcover HC427 While Deng Xiaoping garners much of the credit for China's economic modernization, Kueh (economics and business administration, Chu Hai College of Higher Education, Hong Kong, China) argues that Deng's reforms were made materially possible in large measure by Mao's pursuit of industrialization and modernization.
Using meteorological data collected independently, Kueh (1995) confirms that bad weather was indeed a contributing factor to the poor harvests (see also Peng, 1987).
He was fortunate to have as his friends Peter Howes, a missionary priest who had arrived just a few weeks before him, and Kueh Choo Seng, the Diocesan Registrar.
