An inlet of the Arabian Sea in western India adjoining the Rann of Kutch.

1. (Placename) a former state of W India, on the Gulf of Kutch (an inlet of the Arabian Sea): part of Gujarat state since 1960
2. (Placename) Rann of. an extensive salt waste in W central India, and S Pakistan: consists of the Great Rann in the north and the Little Rann in the southeast; seasonal alternation between marsh and desert; some saltworks. In 1968 an international tribunal awarded about 10 per cent of the border area to Pakistan. Area: 23 000 sq. km (9000 sq. miles)

Since 1947-48--with three brief digressions in the Rann of Kutch (two weeks), oil installations near Karachi (three days), and the rice fields of East Pakistan/Bangladesh (two weeks)--the Kashmir-centred conflicts have actually been quite limited in spatial terms.
Armed standoffs and conflict with Pakistan have arisen in 1965, 1971, and have continued as a stalemate since 1997 with respect to disputed Kashmir, Indus River water sharing, and the Rann of Kutch terminus.
Kutch was devastated by the earthquake of January 2001 which caused havoc in much of north-west India.
