USAGE Mad is often used in informal speech to describe behaviour that is wild or unpredictable, or a person who is behaving in such a way. Care should be taken with this word and with all its synonyms, since many of them can cause great offence. In particular, it is important to avoid the loose use of clinical terms such as psychotic unless you are referring seriously to specific psychiatric disorders. In contexts where psychiatric disorders are being discussed, you should avoid labelling people with the name of their condition. For example, instead of describing someone as psychotic, you would say they were having a psychotic episode; similarly, you would say that someone is affected by depression, rather than labelling them a depressive. Note that some people also object to the phrase suffer from in this context, as in he suffers from paranoia, preferring more neutral verbs such as experience or be affected by. Also avoid using old-fashioned words such as insane, demented, and lunatic with reference to psychiatric disorders. In all contexts, informal and judgmental words such as mental and loony are to be avoided.
