mesopelagic zone

Also found in: Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
mesopelagic zone  (mz-p-ljk)
A layer of the oceanic zone lying beneath the epipelagic zone and above the bathypelagic zone, at depths generally between 200 and 1,000 m (656 and 3,280 ft). The mesopelagic zone receives very little sunlight and is home to many bioluminescent organisms. Because food is scarce in this region, most mesopelagic organisms migrate to the surface to feed at night or live off the falling detritus from the epipelagic ecosystem.

In the bathy- and mesopelagic zones - the largest 3D deep-sea living space - animals either have to cope somehow with food scarcity or migrate long distances up to find food," said MAR-ECO project leader Odd Aksel Bergstad of University of Bergen.
The northern lampfish (Stenobrachius leucopsarus, family Myctophidae) and northern smoothtongue (Leuroglossus schmidti, family Bathylagidae) are mesopelagic fishes, defined by their vertical distribution in the mesopelagic zone (200-1000 m) during daylight hours.
The mesopelagic zone is a twilight region where sunlight is too weak to support photosynthesis, but penetrates sufficiently to affect the behavior of animals on a diurnal schedule, that is, the animals living there can see and react to the changing light levels.
