The ruling party Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), National Executive Committee in June endorsed Banda as its candidate in 2011 elections but the move has created divisions as some members felt that a convention should be held to elect the candidate.
Sudan's past multiparty elections presented complex logistical challenges partly due to the large size of the country, compounded low levels of education among southern Sudanese, leading to widespread suspicion of the few educated government officials involved in running multi-party elections.
Rioting Banda, acting president and leader of the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), narrowly won power after securing around 40 per cent of the vote, compared with Sata's 38 per cent - a difference of just 35,000 votes.
