FERDINAND DE JONG is lecturer in anthropology at the School of World Art Studies and Museology of the University of East Anglia, where he teaches the anthropology of art, material culture, and heritage.
Among specific topics are Quaternary faunas dating as far back as 400,000 years, emerging social complexity in the mid-Holocene Egyptian western desert and its neighbors in south-eastern Dakhleh Oasis, kinship terms in the Coptic documentary papyri from Ismant el-Kharab, museology in the Oasis, and the chemical reconstruction of principal human dietary components of Ptolemaic and early Roman mummies from the Oasis.
In this role she develops around ten exhibitions per year drawn from The Suter's collection or national sources and her curatorial approach is strongly influenced by the field of cultural politics, identity theory and museology.
