Local and migratory birds include the kingfisher, paradise flycatcher, drongos, mynas and the gulls, egrets, swifts and herons.
The birds included a black-capped lory, eight pigeons, a salmon-crested cockatoo, a Goffin's cockatoo, 16 hill mynas, an olive-headed lorikeet, a purple-naped lory, and an umbrella cockatoo.
In the spring, when the banyan tree was full of small red figs, birds of all kinds would flock into its branches: the red-bottomed bulbul, cheerful and greedy; gossipy rosy-pastors; parrots, mynas, and crows squabbling with one another.
