An oral antidepressant with a chemical structure unrelated to SSRIs, tricyclics, or monoamine oxidase inhibitors, thought to inhibit neuronal uptake of serotonin and norepinephrine in the central nervous system.

For example, although sexual dysfunction is a commonly reported adverse event associated with second-generation antidepressants, "bupropion is associated with a lower rate of sexual adverse events than fluoxetine or sertraline, whereas paroxetine has higher rates of sexual dysfunction than fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, nefazodone, or sertraline," they stated.
The continued use of nefazodone can lead to liver ttransplant or even death in some cases.
Newer antidepressants, nefazodone (Serzone) and venlafaxine (Effexor), are recommended for patients who cannot tolerate or are not helped by an SSRI.
