In the vertebrate neural retina, light sensitivity is multi-factorial and depends on the properties of photopigment molecules, their synthesis and incorporation into photoreceptor membranes and the neuronal circuitry between photoreceptor, bipolar and ganglion neurons.
The RPE is positioned: a) Between the sclera and the choroid b) Between the neural retina and the vitreous c) Between the Bruch's membrane and the photoreceptors d) Between Bruch's membrane and the choroid 8.
While the various retinal prosthetics depend on different microfabrication technologies and surgical procedures, they share the common objective of stimulating the remaining neural retina in patients with photoreceptor degeneration.
