She examines the Mexican state of Sonora between 1790 and 1850 and argues that custody disputes there generally strengthened the rights of nonbiological kin: "In the eyes of judges, whoever raised a child bore the expenses of food, clothing, and education was entitled to custody and, therefore, the child's labor and loyalty" (221).
