Of, relating to, or calling for an end to the acquisition of nuclear weapons by additional nations: a nonproliferation treaty.

1. (Military)
a.  limitation of the production or spread of something, esp nuclear or chemical weapons
b.  (as modifier) a nonproliferation treaty
2. failure or refusal to proliferate

Those actions (e.g., diplomacy, arms control, multilateral agreements, threat reduction assistance, and export controls) taken to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction by dissuading or impeding access to, or distribution of, sensitive technologies, material, and expertise. Also called NP. See also counterproliferation.
