Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation units, which circulate blood outside the body and add oxygen, have already saved lives.
The researchers said that patients who developed severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), were treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
There is only one adult unit in the UK which offers extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) - the Glenfield Hospital in Leicester has five such beds and treats around 100 patients a year on average.
