Professor Ofer Bar-Yosef, from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, who co-led the research, said: "Once the parthenocarpic mutation occurred, humans must have recognised that the resulting fruits do not produce new trees, and fig tree cultivation became a common practice.
Such avocados are parthenocarpic, which means that they develop without the benefit of pollination and fertilization and thus do not contain seeds.
This parthenocarpic mutant has spun off another opportunity for CSIRO breeders.
