A minute leaf-eating insect (Taeniothrips inconsequens), originally native to Europe, that is a common pest of pear, maple, almond, and other trees in the eastern United States.

Tom McCrumm of the Massachusetts Maple Producers Association said he and other syrup makers have survived invasions by gypsy moths, tent caterpillars and pear thrips and other threats to their livelihoods, and now they are gearing up to deal with the Asian longhorned beetle while hoping it never reaches them.
Pear thrips initiated the whole thing, but now we're looking more and more at the forest environment for pathogens that can be used against other insects.
An outbreak of the pear thrips caused the defoliation of a half million acres of maple forest in Vermont.
