Urine nitrites can be falsely elevated due to contamination, air exposure, or phenazopyridine, and can be falsely negative due to elevated specific gravity, elevated urobilinogen levels, nitrate reductase-negative bacteria, PH < 6. The following drugs and drug classes may interact with the test to cause questionable results: Aspirin (large amounts) Riboflavin Nalidixic acid (Neg Gram) Sulfa drugs (eg, sulfonamides) Nitrofurantoin (eg, Furadantin) Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) Phenazopyridine (eg, Pyridium) Guidelines for Use Follow instructions on the label exactly. Specifically, the agency noted six potentially serious and unexpected AEs dating back to 1999 for products, such as, digoxin, phentermine, and phenazopyridine, which were not reported to FDA. |
