Suffering from phengophobia, a fear of daylight, he has uncovered the activities of a death squad and is determined to stop them before they kill anyone else on their list.
So to make him even vaguely likeable, they gave him a preposterous phobia to justify his status as the hero - namely phengophobia, fear of daylight.
James Nesbitt has a morbid fear of going out in daylight (that's phengophobia, quiz fans) but he can apparently overcome it by, erm, putting on a pair of sunglasses.
