It was so in the Pequod with the little negro Pippin by nick-name, Pip by abbreviation.
It's a pity, but nothing goes right this week, and Pip has had the worst of the experiment.
My father's family name being Pirrip, and my Christian name Philip, my infant tongue could make of both names nothing longer or more explicit than Pip.
