While Waverley's visit to the Bristol Channel earlier this year was all too brief, we are currently fortunate to have Balmoral, Britain's most travelled pleasure steamer, in our waters, taking passengers to destinations throughout the Bristol Channel.
We can see a tall-masted schooner moored at the Quayside, pleasure steamers berthed in mid-river, a steam loco shunting coal wagons over the High Level Bridge and a lumberman poling timber into the shadows.
The village came into its own on 3 September 1878, as the residents were on hand to rescue survivors from the biggest recorded shipping disaster in British peacetime waters when a pleasure steamer called the Princess Alice was hit by an 890 ton collier (coal ship), the Bywell Castle.
