The pocket gophers I refer to are not the large ground squirrels (we have a few of them, too), but rather a little brown rodent that resembles an overgrown mouse with a squared off nose.
At least 40 specimens are required for regression calculations (Pagels & Blem, 1984), but a smaller sample size can provide a reliable estimate of the body mass of northern pocket gophers Thomomys talpoides (Stewart & Barss, 1985).
Jack's always trying to catch pocket gophers and occasionally he does.
