He was chairman of the Pteridological Section of the Botanical Society of America (1979-1980) and also served as vice president (1994-1996) and president (1996-1998) of the American Fern Society.
By 1891 the British Pteridological Society had been formed and the rest, as they say, is history.
Considering innovations in sequencing technology and the declining cost of sequencing, we are likely only a few years away from having such data and further elucidating this most outstanding pteridological mystery.
