The analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences is the most common approach to determine microbial diversity [6]. The microscopically positive samples were confirmed by DNA sequencing of the small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene. In 1977, Carl Woese of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign first described three domains of life--eukaryotes, bacteria and archaea--using differences in the rRNA to determine relationships between the organisms. |
