This poem is called the Rape of the Lock--rape meaning theft, and the lock not the lock of a door, but a lock of hair.
The "Cypria" begins with the first causes of the war, the purpose of Zeus to relieve the overburdened earth, the apple of discord, the rape of Helen.
This rape of the lock did not produce quite such terrible consequences as the more famous one in Pope's poem, but Cecily's soul was no less agitated than Belinda's.
