[Middle English isophagus, from Medieval Latin sophagus, from Greek oisophagos, arbitrary medical coinage perhaps from ois- : future tense stem of pherein, to carry + -phagos, food (unattested sense) (from phagein, to eat; see bhag- in Indo-European roots).]
